5 Projects for Your Home This Fall

November 5, 2016

Winter is coming, but the good news is fall is here first, which gives you plenty of time to prepare. Autumn is the perfect time to finish up any outdoor projects, and make sure your home is ready for the long, cold months ahead. Whether you’ve already started or are looking for some inspiration, here are some DIY ideas and tips for your home this fall.

Check Your Roof

Did you know that you should inspect your roof at least once a year? Fall is the best time to make sure everything looks okay. Call a professional if you have any visible leaks, but you can do a visual inspection with your own two eyes and a ladder. Look for any visible holes, rot, uneven wear and tear, or gaps in the shingles. Oh, and while you’re up there you can check off another to-list item, and clean the gutters.

Take Care of Your Deck

Fall is the perfect time to do an inspection of your deck. Check for loose railings, and make sure it’s clear of leaves and other debris. Give it a good thorough cleaning to remove any unwanted organisms and prevent rot. If you do see visible signs of damage, be sure to have a professional inspection to help you determine if it’s time to put in a new deck.

Test Windows and Doors

Nothing hikes up a heating bill faster than a cold, drafty house. A quick visual inspection or new windows and doors can save you a winter’s worth of worry. Be sure to check all the seams, and weather stripping closely to make sure there’s no air movement where there shouldn’t be.

Check Your Pipes

There’s nothing worse than a burst pipe in the middle of winter. A simple way to avoid this tragedy is to have your plumbing inspected before it’s too late. An easy headache prevention project is to make sure your exterior water is turned off and your garden hose is detached and stored for the winter.

Maximize Space
Hoping to finally get your cars in the garage this winter? Give yourself some extra space with additional garage storage. If you have larger items that need a space of their own, consider a separate shed.
