Making Fitness Resolutions Last at Home

Keeping with any resolution can be hard, but adding a fitness routine to your life might be the hardest. Fighting the post-holiday hangover and dealing with winter weather don’t make the best starting point. The good news is you can beat the odds with a home gym, and with just a little bit of motivation (and a lot of perspiration) you can meet your fitness goals.

Building a home gym starts with the cardio equipment. Those are the ones that make you sweat just by looking at them. When picking the right one for you, use some common sense. If you want to hit the ground running (or speed walking) a treadmill might be your cup of tea. For those with bad knees or a tendency to trip, there are plenty of other cardio alternatives. An elliptical or stationary bike is a good place to start. No matter what you decide to start with, keep in mind that burnout and injuries are a real thing, so pace yourself.

Now that you’ve got your heart pumping, it’s time to talk weight training. Building muscle is an important part of staying in shape. It helps with things like circulation and fending off bone loss. If this is your first weight training experience, you’ll want to start small. Light weight with high reps is the best way to build muscle without overworking any muscle group. You can achieve this with a weight training circuit using machines or free weights and medicine balls. Just be sure to do your research to avoid muscle injury or strain.

The true key to fitness success is variety. While there may be the initial excitement that comes from doing something new, eventually that excitement will turn into boredom.  Avoid the boredom by mixing things up. Incorporate other activities like running outside or yoga and exercise videos into your routine. Thanks to modern tech, there are plenty of workout apps you can watch through your television. Try adding something new to your routine every week, and you might even find that you look forward to your new fitness routine.
