DirectBuy and Salvation Army Team Up for Kids

December 15, 2015

By: DirectBuy

Each Christmas, the Salvation Army invites local businesses and the public to join them in their Angel Tree program and once again, DirectBuy participated to help bring joy to the lives of children whose families face tough times during the holidays.

DirectBuy has been a big supporter of this program throughout the years, and this season, employees at our corporate office in Merrillville, IN participated, providing gifts to 275 local children in efforts to help give these kids an extra-special Christmas.

The program works by providing the first name, age and gender of local kids, along with their clothing sizes, needs and gift wish lists on special angel cards that were hung on Christmas trees at our corporate offices. Employees then selected the cards and went shopping. If they were unable to shop but still wanted to contribute, DirectBuy’s spirit team accepted the cash donation and went shopping on the employee’s behalf.

DirectBuy Spirit Team member Sabrina Persin has been coordinating the program here at DirectBuy for six years, and looks forward to it every year. “Every year, I am amazed at the level of excitement generated as well as the generosity of so many of our associates,” Persin said.

The angels are hung on trees throughout the DirectBuy offices in early November, and associates eagerly await their arrival. “The most popular comment I hear is, ‘I want to look for a child that is my son/daughter’s age because this is something we do together each year,’ Persin said. “I feel the same way, as my 8 year old twins have grown up with this since they were toddlers and they go with me every year to select gifts for our Angels. Many of us take this opportunity to remind our children the importance of helping others.”

To help make each child’s holiday even brighter, DirectBuy chipped in an extra $10.00 towards each child’s gifts, and when the Salvation Army arrives to pick up the gifts, team members from every department turn out to help. “When the Salvation Army arrives to pick up our 300+ packages many associates, without even being asked, get up and help load them from our storage area to their awaiting trucks,” Persin said. “It is amazing to see the joy on their faces as they carry boxes, bags, and bikes!”

We would like to thank all the Associates who participated in this year’s Angel Tree program. Your donations and generosity is making a different in the lives of some very special children this holiday season.
